WHERE TO RIDE
BIG LAKE:
LOTS
of trails. If your a flatlander this is the place for you. You can get lost here if you
wander off the beaten path. Get a map. Oval races, including dirt bike. Want to run a
river, you can get to many from here. Snowmachine lake races in the summer! Restaurant.
Mile 52.3 of the Parks Hwy Follow the signs
EUREKA! : Means " I found it!"
Over 100 miles of groomed trails amidst some very radicle mountains. I really like it
here. A great place for the entire family. Flat places on lakes, groomed trails, steep
hills. It has it all. RV parking, gas, cabins, restaurant. Mile 128 on the Glen Highway.
HATCHERS PASS::
Probably my favorite. Why? 20 minutes from my house! Not for the beginner. Although the
State (contractor) did a fantastic job of trail prep last year. A literal super highway
from the base all the way through the pass. However, once you leave the trail you better
be careful. Large rocks and holes abound at times. I come here year round and know it
well. For someone who knows their way around it this area holds some of the finest
mountain riding around. Ample parking, bathrooms and restaurants.
NANCY LAKE:
Similar to Big Lake but not as many people. I prefer it here. You can get to the same
trail system without all the people. Plenty of open areas with untouched snow. If there
has been a good snowfall this is a great place to bring the kids. Cabins, Gas. Mile 67.3
of the Parks Hwy. Blink and you miss it.
PETERSVILLE: Hard not to
love it here. Lots of variety but no groomed trails. If the snow has been light the trail
will put your kidneys in your chest. However, once you reach the back country you are in
possibly the most beautiful country on earth. The view of Mt Denali (Mt McKinley) is
simpley awesome. The snow gets DEEP here, bring a shovel.
Scattered B&B's. Get a map of the area. Mile 115 of the Parks highway
SHEEP CREEK LODGE: Used to be a great place with marked trails, great web site and plenty
of good natured snowmachiners. However the new owner caters to the non motorized crowd. If
you go here be prepared to break trail. I only put it here to add another option. It has
gone way downhill. We miss ya Jeff!
VALDEZ: Home of the Alaska Pipeline.
Snow gets DEEP here. Lots of extreme riding. |
